Meet the torts

Here is where you'll read a little about my torts.  Right now I only have 2 tortoises but that could very well change in the future.

My first tort and the guy that started it all is MacGyver.   Mac is an Adult Russian Tortoise. He was purchased from Petco when I really didnt know much about torts.  I quickly learned that most if not ALL store bought Russian torts were once wild tortoises.  These torts are being imported by the hundreds of thousands.  In the future I hope to breed him, I would like to help the species internally by producing home grown hatchlings at affordable prices, hopefully putting a little dent into the import business. It will take me time and more experience to achieve this, but it is a goal of mine.
MacGyver was first placed into an enclosure that used small plastic fencing, something you would use to line a tree that you didnt want your dogs to pee on.  I had no idea how well these torts could climb and dig.  I placed him in his enclosure and went to work the next day.  When I arrived home he was gone! I searched all over my yard for him and found him under some logs.  This happened 3 or 4 times after this and this is how he got the name MacGyver, being he could get out of anything!  I learned quickly that his outdoor home was not suitable and needed a do over.

My second and newest tort is a Pure Brazilian Cherry Head, this tort came all the way from California!  I met the breeder on a tortoise forum and loved the way he worked with his torts.  Since I live in sunny South Florida the climate is IDEAL for this species. Originally I wanted an adult or at the very least a yearling.  I ended up with a very small hatchling.  This little one was hatched on July 4th, 2015 so that only makes him a few months old right now.  I was due to receive this tort as a next day air delivery by 10:30am.  He was held up in Memphis due to some mechanical issues.  I was very stressed and worried, my breeder kept me calm throughout the whole ordeal. The day was getting later and I was losing hope that the tort would arrive.  I had scheduled the day off of work to get the baby situated and soaked and then placed him his/her home.  I was so scared he/she would arrive the next day while I was at work.  The tort ended up showing up at my house at 11:00pm.  When I opened the box I was terrified of what I would find.  Luckily this tort is a soldier, strong and healthy baby and was just fine!  I got him into his nice warm soak, fed him some greens (which were chomped down right away) and then into his temporary indoor home.
